CCR - Music Video
- How Does Your Product Use or Challenge Conventions AND how does it represent
social groups or issues?
In my music video, my product used typical conventions by portraying a literal representation of
the song in certain scenes - a common attribute of music videos. For example, in the song used in
our product - Attracted To You by PinkPantheress, when it reaches the lines “Sometimes I think
of calling you up/To make myself look bad again/But now I’m bringing flowers to your front door,” the scene I filmed depicted these lyrics. The scene that played during these lyrics included me - as the actor of the character in the music video - on the phone attempting to call the other
character while walking towards the camera with flowers in my hand. However, my music video also challenges conventions as it does not have any instruments on screen being played in the video. Often in music videos, the band is on screen lip syncing while playing the instruments or acting as if they are playing the song live. This is a convention my product challenges by only including lip syncing.
- How does your product engage with audiences AND how would it be distributed as a real media text?
My product engages with the audience because it follows a storyline. In the music video, a narrative is created based on the lyrics of the song. This keeps the audience active and engaged as they follow the character through the song as it depicts and tells a story. Additionally, due to the targeted audience of the song being relatable to teenagers or younger generations, the music video is also relatable to this age group. The plot of the music video is about a person, most likely a girl, who has a toxic relationship with what can be assumed to be a past lover. The girl seems to be in denial about still being attracted to their ex romantic partner as she describes her ambivalence. This story is general enough for the audience to relate to it and remain engaged. As a real media text, this music video would be distributed on social media platforms such as YouTube as it is where music videos are most often uploaded.
- How did your production skills develop throughout this project?
Throughout the project, my production skills developed tremendously because I had to do research on a large portion of the editing task. In addition to this, I also had to teach myself how to properly function the camera as I hadn’t used it before. I discovered how to set up the camera on a tripod and steady it into the proper angle needed. During filming, I also learned how to adjust settings to produce the highest quality possible with factors such as exposure being considered. However, it was during the editing process that I believe my skills developed the most. I had so many visions for the music video that I wasn’t able to achieve, but I learned how to makeshift a split screen for the software I had decided to use and my grasp on transitions improved. I am aware I have a long journey ahead of me in the editing process and learning how to create smoother transitions and make the video flow better, but I know that my skills and knowledge expanded tremendously during this project as well.
- How did you integrate technologies - software, hardware and online - in this project?
In this project, I integrated software through the editing program that was used to bring the takes together as one video. This software was Capcut, which I used both the version that I can access through the website on my laptop, and the application available on mobile devices. As for hardware, this was integrated through the technology I used to physically film and edit the music video. This includes the video camera used to shoot each take and scene part of the music video, the laptop and phone used to edit the music video, and tripod that the camera was propped upon. Online, I documented and blogged each step of the process of this project and published it online. The music video itself was published on YouTube and shared across the internet. Moreover, the internet and online were also integrated in this project for research purposes.
